In today’s world, cybersecurity is for everyone. Think of it like locking your doors and windows – you wouldn’t leave your house wide open, right? This guide will walk you through the five bare minimums to help keep your online life safe.
1: Update Passwords (and use a Password Manager)
Passwords are the keys to your online accounts. Using weak or repeated passwords is like using the same key for your house, car, and office. A password manager helps you create and store strong, unique passwords for each site, so you don’t have to remember them all.
Challenge: Start with just 5 accounts- Bank, Email, Social, Computer, Cloud (apple id)
p.s. You can see if your email has been in a data breach: https://haveibeenpwned.com/
2: Keep it Clean with Antivirus/Anti-Malware Software
Just like regular check-ups keep you healthy, antivirus and anti-malware software helps protect your devices from digital “bugs” (viruses, malware, etc.). There are free and paid options available, so you can choose what fits your needs.
Challenge: Pick a vendor and pull the trigger. I use Intego, Video Review
3: Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Made Simple also Multi Factor (MFA)
Think of 2FA or MFA like a double lock on your door. Even if someone guesses your password, they’ll need another piece of information to get in – usually a code sent to your phone. It’s an extra step, but it makes your accounts way more secure. Remember, cyber criminals, just like neighborhood burglars, are looking for low hanging fruit. Small efforts can deter a criminal attempt in the first place!
Challenge: Same 5 above for passwords, enable MFA in your security settings. An additional step you can take is download a MFA app. I use Authy.
Tool 4: VPN – Your Shield on Public Wi-Fi
Using public Wi-Fi is like sending postcards instead of sealed letters – anyone can peek at your information. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates a secure “tunnel” for your data, keeping it private from prying eyes.
Challenge: Sign up for a VPN service (couple dollars per month). I use Nord.
5: Back It Up!
Imagine losing all your photos, documents, and important files. Most of us don’t have to imagine that because its happened before, to some degree. A secure backup solution (like cloud storage or an external hard drive) keeps copies of your data safe, just in case the worst happens.
You’ve Got This!
While it might seem like a lot, these five tools are easier to use than you might think. And the peace of mind they provide? Totally worth it. Start with one tool, then gradually add more. You’ll be more cyber secure than the day before.
